Review: Burt's Bees Gud Orange Petalooza Shampoo and Conditioner

When I see new natural products at my local drugstore, I like to check them out. What are the ingredients like? Is it affordable? Burt's Bees new Gud line smelled delicious, so I decided to see if their cruelty-free Orange Petalooza Shampoo and Conditioner performed as good as they smelled.

Pros:

• Lovely citrus scent
• Texture similar to conventional products
• Conditioner helped detangle
• Shampoo left hair clean but not dry
• Easy to tell bottles apart by shape
• Retail availability
• Affordable prices

Cons:

• Moderate safety rating on EWG

Summary:
These products performed similar to conventional shampoos and conditioners. The shampoo and conditioner both had nice textures and left my hair soft. The conditioner wasn't exactly a detangling conditioner, but it did make my long hair a bit more manageable. I love the packaging on these products. As a wearer of contacts, I am often half-blind in the shower, so it is great to have the designs reversed so I can tell the shampoo and conditioner apart without reading the front. I was disappointed to see that these both the shampoo and the conditioner came in at a moderate 5 on EWG's Skin Deep database, and not just due to fragrance. I would like to see these products reformulated to be more gentle, and I would also love to see Burt's Bees pursue the vegan market by actively marking their products without animal ingredients as such. While I loved that these products are cruelty-free, I would like to see a reformulation before I can recommend them over competing natural products.

Review: Acure Organics Moroccan Argan Oil + Argan Stem Cell Shampoo and Conditioner

Many of us have tried a lot of different shampoos and conditioners in our lifetimes. Most have that fruity or "salon" smell, or some slight variation. One of the most refreshingly uniquely scented hair care lines I've ever tested is by Acure Organics. Using acai, almond extract, and a variety of other delicious ingredients, this shampoo and conditioner are like none other.

Pros:

• Conditioner detangles
• Wonderful fruity fragrance
• Gentle formulas
• Many organic ingredients
  

Cons:

• Moderately priced

Summary:
I really loved the scent of this shampoo and conditioner set. These products also performed really well. The shampoo forms a nice lather and the conditioner left my hair smooth and manageable. They each contain several organic ingredients and are gentle. The shampoo rates a low 1, while the conditioner comes in slightly higher at a 2 on EWG's Skin Deep database. These products are both vegan and gluten-free. I also love the packaging and have seen them in retail stores. The only real downside is that they are priced around $10.99 per bottle (full sized bottles), but it is fair for the quality of the product. If you're looking for an organic shampoo and conditioner, this set is great for normal, dry, damaged, and curly hair.

Review: Whole Foods 365 Herbal Mint Shampoo

I am often asked about affordable options for natural beauty. Only a few stores, such as Whole Foods, have ventured into a "house line" for beauty. Their 365 Everyday Value brand isn't just for food. I put their Herbal Mint Shampoo to the test.

Pros:

• Affordable
• Comes in regular and larger sizing
• Lathers well
• Avoids many harsh chemicals
• Available in a variety of scents and types
• Packaging is 50% recycled
  

Cons:

• Only available in-store at Whole Foods

Summary:
My man is a huge fan of mint-scented grooming products, and this shampoo is no exception. It performs as well as the conventional competition and has a refreshing scent that works well for both men and women. I was surprised to see that, despite the long list of unpronounceable ingredients, this still ranked a low 2 on the EWG Skin Deep database. It appears the main drawback to this shampoo is that it is only available in Whole Foods stores (and not online). However, it is one of the best budget lines on the market, so I recommend checking it out at a Whole Foods near you.
