Restaurant Review: Washington D.C.'s Teaism

Vegetarian Bento Box
When I was planning my trip to Washington, D.C., my guy suggested a place he'd been before called Teaism, a tea shop and restaurant. The concept was familiar to me from Austin's Steeping Room, but the menu in the D.C. eatery was heavily inspired by cuisine from Japan and other Asian countries. I was really looking forward to trying it, and two of the locations were convenient for us.

Pros:
  • Clearly-labeled vegan options
  • Uses more unusual foods like Seitan
  • High-quality produce
  • Great sauces
  • Many healthy options
  • Generous portions
Cons:
  • Caters to more adventurous tastes
Seitan Stir Fry
Summary:
We ate at Teaism twice, first in the Dupont Circle location for dinner, and later in the Penn Quarter location (convenient to the National Mall) for brunch. The menus were fairly similar between the two locations. The food was very fresh and healthy, and offered a variety of Asian-inspired choices mixed with more traditional foods like scones and oatmeal. If you're looking for breakfast, the options are more mainstream, but the lunch and dinner entree tend to have more international flavors. Portions were generous (plenty for leftovers or to split). Both restaurants were busy, but not overly crowded. While the restaurants aren't all-vegan, they do offer a variety of vegan options and the staff seemed familiar with vegan concerns. If you're looking for somewhere healthy and have an affinity for Asian cuisine, I highly recommend Teaism.
