Restaurant Review: Kauai's Mermaids Cafe

Tofu Satay Plate with Hibiscus Lemonade
On a recent visit to Kauai, we were looking for somewhere to eat near Old Kapa'a Town, which was located near some other interesting attractions. I had seen Mermaids Cafe online, and was excited to try their vegan options.

Pros:
  • Vegetarian/vegan options available
  • Fresh flavors
  • Large enough to share
  • Made to order
  • Caters to a variety of tastes and diets
  • Fun mermaid atmosphere
Cons:
  • Can get crowded during busy times
Summary:
Mermaids is a sidewalk cafe, and it is tucked away in a cozy spot between other buildings. There are colorful paintings on the wall and it has a fun outdoor atmosphere. Food is very fresh and made to order. I shared the tofu satay with a friend, and we tried the delicious hibiscus lemonade as well. Portions were very generous, so the prices are fairly reasonable. There isn't a lot of space to eat, and sometimes the restaurant can get crowded. Seating is outdoors so you can enjoy the Hawaiian weather. However, there are other places to eat nearby, including a beach area. The food was quite tasty and the menu has a pan-Asian feel with Hawaiian influences. They are open for lunch and dinner, though this felt more like a lunch spot to me. Our food came in a styrofoam box, so I'd love to see eco-friendly takeout boxes in the future. Otherwise, I highly recommend making the stop for fresh vegetarian/vegan food if you're on Kauai.
