Review: Jurlique Rose Shower Gel

Australian products are often overlooked in the search for natural beauty products in the U.S., as few Aussie companies have a presence here in the states. One company, Jurlique, has obtained a foothold on the market here by offering distribution through companies such as Sephora. I put Jurlique's Rose Shower Gel to the test to see how it matches up to the American competition.

Pros:
  • Pleasant flowery fragrance
  • Left skin feeling soft
  • A little goes a long way
  • Lathers well
  • Available in retail stores around the world
Cons:
  • Fairly expensive for a shower gel
Summary:
The rose shower gel performed quite well, lathering as I expected, and offering a pleasant fragrance that faded gently after my shower. I was surprised to see it ranked fairly high on EWG's Skin Deep scale, scoring a 6 due to fragrance as well as multiple ingredients that ranked in the 3-4 range. It is not vegan due to the use of honey. While I enjoyed the performance of this product and was glad to see that it avoided many chemicals found it the drugstore competitors, I would love to see it reformulated to be gentler and vegan-friendly.

Review: Jurlique Calendula Cream

One of the most common products that I'm sent to review is moisturizer. There are dozens of body lotions that work well, but I always look for what sets each one apart. Jurlique, for example, has a calendula cream that is specifically designed to be calming for skin that is sun-exposed, irritated, or otherwise sensitive.

Pros:
  • A little goes a long way
  • Very hydrating
  • No real scent
  • Soothing on sun-exposed skin
  • Suitable for most with sensitive skin
  • Gentle ingredients
Cons:
  • Fairly expensive
Summary:
I loved how this cream was non-greasy and absorbed quickly into my skin. It is thicker than other creams and has a yellow color. A small dab is very hydrating. It has a soothing effect on skin - providing moisture without any "cooling" effect that sometimes can exacerbate issues. I was glad to see that this rated a fairly low 3 on the EWG Skin Deep database, but I'd love to see this made vegan with the removal of ingredients such as honey. At $37 for 1.4 oz, this isn't a "bargain" cream, but it is gentle on most sensitive skin and one tube should last awhile. If you have sensitive skin and are having trouble finding a moisturizer, this gentle one may be worth a try.

Review: Jurlique Love Balm

I'm a big fan of multi-tasking products. They are great for travel and help keep your drawers and counter tops from getting cluttered. Jurlique makes a multi-tasking Love Balm that works on lips, elbows, cuticles, and more.

Pros:
  • Fresh tangerine scent from essential oil
  • Melts easily on contact with skin
  • A little goes a long way
  • Affordable
  • Works on lips, elbows, and more
  • Comes in a recyclable tin
Cons:
  • Not vegan
Summary:
Although the 0.5 oz size is conveniently compact, you only need a little of this balm to re-hydrate your lips, elbows, or cuticles. This is a great item to travel with, as long as you don't plan on going anywhere too warm (or the balm may melt). I love the tangerine scent, which is from tangerine essential oil. This came in at a 4 on EWG's Skin Deep safety scale, which is probably a little high since fragrance is weighted heavily (this fragrance is from an essential oil). The other ingredients are pretty mild. The main downside to this product is that it contains beeswax, making it unsuitable for vegans. I would love to see a vegan version with the same great texture in the future. Otherwise, it's a great multi-tasking balm that is handy for travel.
