Review: Ecco Bella Paperback Compact and FlowerColor Eyeshadow

For a long time, I'd been struggling to find a good pressed eyeshadow compact for smokey eyes. I'd seen a few here and there, but most were not vegan or offered only tiny colors that couldn't be swapped out. Ecco Bella created a fascinating design with their magnetic paperback compact, a recyclable and eco-friendly option that can be filled with vegan eyeshadows or one of several vegan blushes.

Pros:
  • Very eco-friendly
  • Customizable with your own eyeshadows or blushes
  • Most shadows and blushes are vegan and gluten-free
  • Magnetic
  • Affordable refill options
  • Pressed powders travel well and are easy to apply
Cons:
  • May be a bit of an investment to purchase and fill compact initially
Summary:
I am in love with this compact. I haven't seen anything else like it, but I hope that this becomes the standard for shadows and powders in the future. I love how you can create as many different compact "sets" as you want (daytime, nighttime, etc.) or just have a basic one with blush and a light/dark eyeshadow pairing. As a makeup artist, I also love how I can buy the shades in individual "refill" tins that also work in larger containers (such as the larger magnetic Z Palette). There is so much less waste with this product; I can't express how nice it is not to have to buy a whole new plastic palette when you run out of a single color.

Ecco Bella also offers a nice selection of colors. They have a variety of options for eye shades, including basicshimmer, and darker "eyeliner" shades (which can be used as normal shadows as well). Not all of the blushes are vegan, but the majority are (and they are clearly labeled). Safety ratings are also low, coming in at a 2 (shimmer eyeshadows) and a 3 (eyeliners and blushes) in EWG's Skin Deep database. I was sent the pale peach color fawn as a sample, so I wasn't able to gauge wear as well as with a darker shade, but the shades seem to be smooth and apply easily. As with other eyeshadows, however, I recommend using an eyeshadow primer. If you're looking for a safe, vegan and gluten-free palette, Ecco Bella offers a fantastic eco-friendly option.

Also available on Amazon.com: compact, shadows, and blushes.
