Restaurant Review: Portland's Laughing Planet Cafe

Soylent Green (it's vegan, really)
I had a wonderful opportunity to go back to my home state of Oregon and spend some time enjoying the food and the sights. I converted from vegetarian to vegan after I left, so I was excited to sample some of Portland's awesome restaurants. While we were only there for a few short days, we went back to one restaurant twice: Laughing Planet Cafe.

Pros:
  • Clearly-marked vegan choices on menu
  • Offers choices to suit almost any appetite
  • Has a fun personality to the menu and decor
  • Affordable and casual
  • Uses organic ingredients when available
Cons:
  • Not the best place for a romantic dinner
Summary:
A rice and beans kids meal with added kale and broccoli
I really enjoyed the food at Laughing Planet Cafe. The items I ordered were a lot like what I would choose to make, if I were at home. It is great to have a place where you can get simple, healthy food without paying a high premium. The atmosphere was really fun; there were godzillas and robot toys on the walls and dinosaurs for the kids to play with. While Laughing Planet isn't a vegetarian restaurant, they are very accommodating to vegans and even had vegan desserts like coconut ice cream bars.

Perhaps one of my favorite aspects of Laughing Planet was how the sustainable practices and vegan ingredient options were so casually integrated. I would love to see more restaurants like this that make eco-friendly choices and offer healthy menu items, and it would be great to see a chain like this expand to cities like Austin. Until then, I will keep my fingers crossed that more business owners take their lead from restaurants like Laughing Planet.
