Review: Every Man Jack Age Defying Eye Cream

It seems every woman over 30 has an eye cream, but what about men? Men also show signs of aging, and the delicate eye area is not immune. Yet most eye creams I've seen tend to be filled with flowery scents or have girly packaging. Enter Every Man Jack, who saw this need and made an Age Defying Eye Cream for men.

Pros:
  • Affordable
  • Fairly gentle formula
  • No girly scents
  • Packaging suitable for men or women
  • Can help improve skin texture
Cons:
  • May not be available locally
Summary:
This eye cream has almost no scent, and helps keep the eye area moisturized. With consistent use, I did notice an improvement in the skin texture around my eyes. The formula rates a moderate 4 on the EWG Skin Deep database, but no one ingredient sticks out as particularly hazardous. It is a vegan formula and a little goes a long way. I also was impressed by the price point. At just $10, this is a great value, and will last a long time. I've seen some Every Man Jack products locally, and this one might be available in retail stores (but I recommend calling first). However, you'll want to order online for the best selection. If you're looking for an eye cream suitable for men--or women--check out this option from Every Man Jack.

Also available on Amazon.com.

Review: Weleda Pomegranate Firming Day Cream and Night Cream

Night Cream
I used to have one moisturizer that I used mainly at night. At the time, I lived in a fairly humid climate. When I moved to drier climates, I found that I had to adjust my skin care routine, especially in the winter. Companies like Weleda make it easy to choose lotions for day and night, offering several sets for different skin types. They offer a pair of Pomegranate Firming Day Cream and corresponding Night Cream, designed for mature skin.

Pros:
  • Lovely scent
  • Leaves skin feeling soft and supple
  • Very hydrating formulas
  • A little goes a long way
  • Retail availability

Review: Korres Quercetin and Oak Anitageing Primer

One of the most essential tools in makeup artist's kit is a primer. This is especially important when using eco-friendly and natural products, which tend not to have the chemicals and preservatives that give the "long-lasting" effect in some conventional products. Silicone-based primers have gained a lot of popularity recently, but sometimes they can clog pores. Korres makes a Quercetin and Oak Primer that is gentle and effective, while providing anti-aging benefits.

Pros:
  • No silicone or mineral oil
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Light, pleasant fragrance
  • Retail availability
  • A little goes a long way
  • Helps makeup last longer
Cons:
  • A little pricey ($33 for 1 oz)
Summary:
This is the primer I trust enough to use on my clients. I have been looking a long time, but I haven't found many other primers that absorb so quickly or work as well. It can serve as a moisturizer on its own, but it is also light enough to be worn over moisturizer and under liquid foundation (as long as adequate time is allowed for absorption). It smells lovely and hasn't bothered a single client; many have, in fact, asked what it was that smelled so nice. This product rates about a 4 on the EWG Skin Deep database, which is low-moderate. I would love to see a fragrance-free version in the future, perhaps to help bring the rating even lower. However, I am delighted that it is a vegan formula and is still gentle on the skin. This primer is one of my favorites, and I highly recommend it for everyday wear.

Review: Acure Organics Eye Cream

There are countless eye creams on the market, and each promises to address one or more of the common concerns: puffiness, dark circles, and wrinkles. What if there was a product that really could address all three? Acure Organics' Eye Cream promises to do just that, so I put it to the test.

Pros:
  • Under $20
  • A little goes a long way
  • Vegan and gluten-free
  • Improves texture around eyes
  • Can be worn under makeup
  • Many organic ingredients
Cons:
  • May not be available locally
Summary:
I loved the light texture of this product, which made it versatile enough to use both day and night. Each time I applied it, I saw a nice improvement in my eye texture, without any tingling or odd sensations that sometimes come with other creams. The effect on my chronic undereye circles was more gradual, but I do have thin, fair skin. I also love how Acure products are so carefully sourced and consciously packaged as well.

The EWG rating came in at a 3, which is pretty low. While Acure products seem to be available at many retail stores, I recommend calling ahead if you're looking for something specific (since they may not carry that exact product). If you're looking for a an eye cream that will help improve your skin in a couple of short weeks, I highly recommend this one.

Also available on Amazon.com.
