Review: Now Solutions Green Tea & Pomegranate Day Cream

I tend to be very discerning when it comes to facial moisturizers. I have normal to oily skin, so I seek out lotions that are light and not too oily. I also prefer lotions that absorb quickly, so I can wear them under any type of makeup. One product that meets these requirements is Now Solutions' Green Tea & Pomegranate Day Cream.

Pros:
  • Light, fruity scent
  • Affordable
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Made with organic aloe vera leaf gel
  • Light enough to wear under makeup

Review: Weleda Pomegranate Firming Day Cream and Night Cream

Night Cream
I used to have one moisturizer that I used mainly at night. At the time, I lived in a fairly humid climate. When I moved to drier climates, I found that I had to adjust my skin care routine, especially in the winter. Companies like Weleda make it easy to choose lotions for day and night, offering several sets for different skin types. They offer a pair of Pomegranate Firming Day Cream and corresponding Night Cream, designed for mature skin.

Pros:
  • Lovely scent
  • Leaves skin feeling soft and supple
  • Very hydrating formulas
  • A little goes a long way
  • Retail availability

  • Many organic ingredients
  • Vegan and gluten-free

Review: Acure Organics Cocoa Butter + CoQ10 Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion

I don't use a lot of body lotions, but I do use a little at night, particularly on my hands, elbows, and knees. Some people prefer intensive moisturizers for night, but I tend to prefer something that absorbs quickly - as I like to read before bed and don't want to get greasy lotion all over the pages or my kindle. I was curious to see what type of lotion - light or intensive - I would find in my bottle of Acure Organics Cocoa Butter + CoQ10 Ultra-Hydrating Body Lotion.

Pros:
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy
  • Generous size
  • Unscented
  • Many organic ingredients
Cons:
  • Goes on a little lighter than the name implies
Summary:
While the name suggests that the lotion provides intensive hydration, I found it to have a nicely smooth, quickly-absorbing texture. It left my skin feeling silky, not greasy. This is the type of moisturizer I prefer, but I was expecting something with more intense moisture when the name says "ultra-hydrating." I loved how it doesn't have a scent; it can be hard to find a lotion that isn't too fragrant or truly doesn't smell like much. This came in at a low 1 on EWG's Skin Deep database, which is very gentle. The ingredients are mostly organic, another big plus, especially considering that one 8 oz tube runs just under $10. If you're looking for a gentle lotion that is gluten-free, vegan, and organic, this is a great option for an everyday moisturizer.

Review: Bull Dog Natural Skincare Original Moisturizer

Skincare used to be "just for women," but the market for men is growing by leaps and bounds. I am always excited to try out products for men, to see if they stand up to their female-targeted counterparts. So when I was sent a sample of Bull Dog Original Moisturizer, I put it to the test.

Pros:
  • Light, earthy scent
  • Gentle ingredients
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy
  • Retail availability
Cons:
  • More expensive than drugstore moisturizers
Summary:
I enjoyed the earthy scent of this moisturizer. While the blend is more suited than men than to women, it was great to see a line that doesn't have a strong cologne fragrance. The Bull Dog line is also specifically formulated for men and is vegan, which is fantastic. On my skin, it absorbed quickly and felt like a nice, light facial moisturizer. The formula comes in around a 3 on EWG's Skin Deep database, but I suspect it is safer than indicated because the rating is weighed down by the naturally-occurring components of essential oils, such as linalool and geranoil.

Although this is more expensive than regular drugstore moisturizers, the quality of the ingredients, vegan formula, and ethical company philosophy make this a good value. If you know a guy who could use a good skin care line, check out Bull Dog's line.

Review: Acure Organics Oil Control Facial Moisturizer

I was fortunate to breeze through high school with a clear complexion. Then, when I hit college, I had some trouble with blemishes. It was never anything drastic, but it was enough that I needed to actually start a skin care routine. I thought my face would clear up as an adult, but I still have occasional breakouts, especially if I'm not diligent about washing my face.

Fortunately, with the proper skin care products, my face clears up in no time. One of the most important components of my routine is a great moisturizer that will help balance the oils in my skin. I've been loyal to one or two over the years, but they just might have a new rival in town: Acure Organics Oil Control Facial Moisturizer.

Pros:
  • A little goes a long way
  • Pleasant scent from essential oils
  • Mostly organic ingredients
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Won't clog pores
Cons:
  • This specific product might not be available locally
Summary:
I really enjoyed using this moisturizer. The formula is fairly thick, so a regular tube will last quite a while. I tend to apply a more generous application at night, as the excess moisture leaves my face soft by the morning. If I'm using this under makeup, I just apply a light layer for the day. Essentially, a light application absorbs quickly, but if you use more, it works well for a night treatment.

I was really happy to see how Acure goes to great lengths to offer full disclosure on ingredients and sources. Most of the ingredients in this moisturizer are organic, and several are also Fair Trade Certified. Don't be surprised by what may look at first like a long ingredients list - this moisturizer rates a very low 1 on EWG's Skin Deep database.

Also, I really love the packaging and presentation of the Acure line. These bottles are pretty enough to display on your counter and the packaging is made from recycled sources. Yes, the price is higher than your average drugstore product, but Acure seems like a company that is actually putting your money to good use, by ethically-sourcing their products, using organic ingredients, and participating in initiatives such as carbon neutral production. Honestly, I'm glad that they offer their products at a moderate price range, instead of charging a luxury premium.

While Acure products are available in a variety of retail stores, you may need to order online for specific products, such as this moisturizer.  If you're looking for a facial moisturizer for combination to oily skin, I highly recommend Acure's Oil Control Facial Moisturizer.

Also available on Amazon.com.
