Review: Lunaroma Body Butter

I've been using body lotions for many years, and most have a very similar texture. They usually have a consistency similar to yogurt and disappear on contact with skin. Only recently have body butters appeared on the market, and Lunaroma offers a line in a variety of indulgent scents.

Pros:
  • Light, whipped texture
  • Available in a variety of luscious scents
  • Simple ingredients
  • A little goes a long way
  • Uses organic shea butter and jojoba

Review: Weleda Skin Food

Elbows and knees are some of the trickiest spots to keep soft. Between winter weather and summer heat waves, they often get dry and flaky. Sometimes, they need a little TLC. That's where products like Weleda's Skin Food come in. It is specifically designed for dry and rough skin.

Pros:
  • Lovely scent
  • Recyclable packaging
  • Very hydrating
  • Great for elbows and knees
  • Sold in retail stores

Review: Seaweed Bath Co Body Cream

If you have Psoriasis or another skin condition, finding the right body moisturizer can be a big challenge. Seaweed Bath Co. makes a line of products specifically to help those suffering from Psoriasis. While I don't have experience with that condition, I tested their Citrus Body Cream to see how it performed on regular skin.

Pros:
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy
  • Light cirtus fragrance
  • Easy to apply
  • Gentle formula
  • Packaging made from recycled plastic

Review: Jurlique Calendula Cream

One of the most common products that I'm sent to review is moisturizer. There are dozens of body lotions that work well, but I always look for what sets each one apart. Jurlique, for example, has a calendula cream that is specifically designed to be calming for skin that is sun-exposed, irritated, or otherwise sensitive.

Pros:
  • A little goes a long way
  • Very hydrating
  • No real scent
  • Soothing on sun-exposed skin
  • Suitable for most with sensitive skin
  • Gentle ingredients
Cons:
  • Fairly expensive
Summary:
I loved how this cream was non-greasy and absorbed quickly into my skin. It is thicker than other creams and has a yellow color. A small dab is very hydrating. It has a soothing effect on skin - providing moisture without any "cooling" effect that sometimes can exacerbate issues. I was glad to see that this rated a fairly low 3 on the EWG Skin Deep database, but I'd love to see this made vegan with the removal of ingredients such as honey. At $37 for 1.4 oz, this isn't a "bargain" cream, but it is gentle on most sensitive skin and one tube should last awhile. If you have sensitive skin and are having trouble finding a moisturizer, this gentle one may be worth a try.

Review: Jurlique Love Balm

I'm a big fan of multi-tasking products. They are great for travel and help keep your drawers and counter tops from getting cluttered. Jurlique makes a multi-tasking Love Balm that works on lips, elbows, cuticles, and more.

Pros:
  • Fresh tangerine scent from essential oil
  • Melts easily on contact with skin
  • A little goes a long way
  • Affordable
  • Works on lips, elbows, and more
  • Comes in a recyclable tin
Cons:
  • Not vegan
Summary:
Although the 0.5 oz size is conveniently compact, you only need a little of this balm to re-hydrate your lips, elbows, or cuticles. This is a great item to travel with, as long as you don't plan on going anywhere too warm (or the balm may melt). I love the tangerine scent, which is from tangerine essential oil. This came in at a 4 on EWG's Skin Deep safety scale, which is probably a little high since fragrance is weighted heavily (this fragrance is from an essential oil). The other ingredients are pretty mild. The main downside to this product is that it contains beeswax, making it unsuitable for vegans. I would love to see a vegan version with the same great texture in the future. Otherwise, it's a great multi-tasking balm that is handy for travel.

Review: Now Solutions Shea Butter Lotion

When I hear of shea butter, I think of a thick, hydrating lotion. Now Solution makes a moisturizer with 10% shea butter, and it has a delightful scent: citrus, like citrus candy.

Pros:
  • Fun citrus scent
  • Absorbs quickly
  • Non-greasy
  • Affordable
  • Available in retail stores

Review: Annmarie Gianni Radiant Skin Silk

Between the hot Texas summer and indoor heating in the winter, I find my skin much drier than it used to be before I moved to Austin. Now, I have come to rely on moisturizers for my hands, knees, elbows, and any other areas that look dry. I was excited to try a sample of Annmarie Gianni's Radiant Skin Silk, a luxurious body moisturizer that smells similar to vanilla.

Pros:
  • Lovely fragrance similar to vanilla
  • A little goes a long way
  • No chemical preservatives
  • Many organic and/or wildcrafted ingredients
Cons:
  • Luxury price
Summary:
The Radiant Skin Silk is an intensive moisturizer that will leave your skin feeling soft and satiny. It may take a little practice to apply the right amount; I found I needed much less than I initially thought.  I love the vanilla scent, even though it comes from Peru balsam and not vanilla itself.  This moisturizer may be too intensive for the face, but it worked well on my body (especially my hands and elbows). If you're looking for a nice moisturizer and don't mind a higher price, this product is well made and provides intensive moisture. If you're hesitant to try a full-sized product, the company offers a variety of sample-sized products, though I didn't currently see one available for this particular product.
